John Terry stripped of England captaincy by Capello

Terry was appointed captain of the national side in August 2008

John Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy following allegations he had an affair with an England team-mate's ex-girlfriend.

Terry, 29, held talks with England boss Fabio Capello at Wembley on Friday."After much thought I have made the decision that it will be best for me to take the captaincy away from John Terry," said Capello in a statement.Terry, who has been replaced by fellow defender Rio Ferdinand, said he abided by Capello's decision to demote him."I fully respect Fabio Capello's decision," the Chelsea centre-half said in a statement. "I will continue to give everything for England.

Dirk Kuyt grabbed the only goal of the game to settle a truculent Merseyside derby as 10-man Liverpool beat Everton to further their top-four ambitions.

The Dutchman rose to head home a Steven Gerrard corner to settle a fierce game.And it was little more than the hosts deserved after recovering valiantly from Sotiros Kyrgiakos's first-half red card for a lunge at Marouane Fellaini.Tim Cahill headed Everton's best chance over but the visitors rarely threatened before Stephen Pienaar's late red card.

Burnley 2 - 1 West Ham

Burnley picked up their first Premier League win since October to leave West Ham languishing in the relegation zone.

David Nugent paved the way for Burnley's first win under Brian Laws when he lobbed home a long ball from new signing Daniel Fox.Enjoying a debut to remember, Fox swept in a superb second-half free-kick.West Ham struck the woodwork twice after the break, but had to settle for a late close-range effort from new signing Araujo Ilan.
